Abstract :
This article includes a contrastive analysis of English and French dish names of the fast food restaurants McDonald’s, Burger King, and Kentucky Fried Chicken in Canada. This analysis is carried out from a morphological, syntactical, and semantic perspective. According to the language laws of the province of Quebec, English product names must be translated into French. Therefore, it is only natural that in the case of these three internationally operating fast food chains many product names are translated or adapted into French. This is in sharp contrast to the situation in France where anglicisms on menus appear to be more widely accepted. Nonetheless, several anglicisms, such as hamburger or cheeseburger, which have become part of the French language, can also be found on the menus of the fast food restaurants analysed in Quebec.
