Document Details : Title: Parthian Rhytons from Veliran Author(s): NE'MATI, Mohammad Reza , SADRAIE, Ali Journal: Iranica Antiqua Volume: 45 Date: 2010 Pages: 305-319 DOI: 10.2143/IA.45.0.2047123 Abstract : Recent earth moving activities in Damavand region resulted in the discovery of an archaeological site with significant data on the Parthian and Sasanian periods in N-Iran. Excavations at a Parthian cemetery produced three different burial traditions and grave types: a hypogeum, a jar burial and a stone-lined tomb. A hypogeum, cut into natural deposits, was the most important Parthian find from the site. Amongst the most characteristic objects from this tomb were four attractive rhytons: three in the shape of a goat/ibex and one in the shape of a human leg with shoe. Based on the presence of early Parthian coins and pottery, the rhytons are datable to the late 2nd/early 1st. century BC. |
