Abstract :

Marx and Engels thought that they had found the historical and natural foundation of their political ideology in the Darwinian theory of evolution, while criticizing Darwin’s Malthusianism. This article shows that Darwin very prudently kept himself to the scientific field alone and left the philosophical reflection on the continuity between animal and man (which however he never stopped asserting) open. As to the relationship between living organisms and social organizations, he insists rather on the difference keeping away both from extreme spiritualism and from reductive biologism.
