Document Details : Title: The Church as an Icon Subtitle: A Revision of the Sacramental Model of the Church Author(s): ŠEŠEIKAITĖ, Agnė Journal: Questions Liturgiques/Studies in Liturgy Volume: 90 Issue: 2-3 Date: 2009 Pages: 142-152 DOI: 10.2143/QL.90.2.2042629 Abstract : This article is an attempt to revise the sacramental model of the Church, as developed by Avery Dulles, with the help of Louis Dupré’s phenomenology of religious symbol and Jean-Luc Marion’s concept of the icon. To that end we first give a brief overview of Dulles’ model and discuss its strengths and weaknesses. We then introduce Dupré’s phenomenology of religious symbols, in which symbols are the primary category of transcendence and always precede religious experience. Following this, we turn to the concept of the icon as it has been understood in Eastern Christian tradition and applied to contemporary theology by Jean-Luc Marion. The theology of the icon presents icons as windows of communication between humans and transformed divine reality. Therefore, according to Marion, contemplation of an icon is a kenotic and transforming experience because in the icon our eyes meet the gaze of the Other. Thus the concept of the icon deepens and expands a traditional view of religious symbols and, by extension, the sacraments. In conclusion, we argue that this new perspective on sacraments helps to revise the sacramental model of the Church, making it more relevant to the contemporary postmodern ecumenical context and opening up fresh insights on understanding the role of the Church in the human-divine relationship. Cet article est un essai de révision du modèle sacramentel de l’Église tel qu’il est développé par Avery Dulles, à l’aide de la phénoménologie du symbole religieux de Louis Dupré et du concept de l’icône de Jean-Luc Marion. Dans ce but nous présentons d’abord un bref aperçu du modèle de Dulles et discutons ses forces et faiblesses. Nous introduisons alors la phénoménologie des symboles religieux de Dupré dans laquelle ceux-ci constituent la catégorie primaire de la transcendance et précèdent toujours l’expérience religieuse. Ensuite nous nous tournons vers le concept de l’icône tel qu’il a été compris dans la tradition chrétienne orientale et appliqué à la théologie contemporaine par Jean-Luc Marion. La théologie de l’icône présente les icônes comme des ouvertures de communication entre les humains et transforment la réalité divine. Pour cela, d’après Marion, la contemplation d’une icône est une expérience de kénose et transformatrice car dans l’icône nos yeux rencontrent le regard pénétrant de l’Autre. Ainsi le concept de l’icône approfondit et répand la perception traditionnelle des symboles religieux et, par extension, des sacrements. En conclusion, nous argumentons que cette nouvelle approche des sacrements contribue à revoir le modèle sacramentel de l’Église, le présentant plus adapté dans le contexte contemporain postmoderne œcuménique et ouvert à des vues fraîches sur la signification du rôle de l’Église dans la relation humano-divine. |
