Abstract :
The Present Caught in Presumptions - Martin Heidegger and the Possibility of a Diagnosis of Our Time
This contribution addresses the challenges and dilemmas of one of the crucial phenomena in contemporary philosophy, the attempt to write an ontology of the present. Unlike in the days of Hegel such an endeavor is quite problematic as we have discovered the radical temporality of philosophizing in the analytic as well as in continental thinking. The pivot of this article is the way Heidegger has tried to develop an ontology of the present, but also other attempts are discussed. Although the conclusion of the article stresses a certain deadlock in the ontology of the present — and of the future for that matter, the tension between the existential position of the philosopher and his ontological pretentions are a reality we must face and endure.
