Abstract :
This article traces the progression of Fr. Jacques Dupuis’ theology of religious pluralism. Special emphasis is given to the nature and soteriological importance that the mediation of Christ has within his argument. The article presents the major movements within Dupuis’ opera where he has recourse to Christ’s mediation. After Dupuis’ argument is examined, a series of critical reflections are made based on the theology of Christ’s mediation as it is articulated in select patristic writings, Thomas Aquinas, and some of Dupuis’ contemporary interlocutors. Whenever it is possible Dupuis’ own responses to these criticisms are also included. The central question raised by this article is whether Dupuis’ recourse to Christ’s mediation within his system of pluralism adequately appreciates the ontological nature and significance of the office of mediation in relation to Christ’s human nature.
