Document Details : Title: De zelfprofilering van Albert Verwey als modern auteur Author(s): DORLEIJN, Gillis J. , VAN DEN AKKER, Wiljan Journal: Spiegel der Letteren Volume: 50 Issue: 4 Date: 2008 Pages: 433-461 DOI: 10.2143/SDL.50.4.2033502 Abstract : Using insights from field theory, especially Gisèle Sapiro’s analysis of the factors connected with the autonomization of the literary field, the emergent possibles in relation to the establishment of modern authorship, this article presents a case study on the Dutch author Albert Verwey (1865-1937). It shows the way the young Verwey assumed the modern, ‘autonomous’ authorship, a role that became a possible option in the proces of the development of a structured literary field. Verwey’s actions are interpreted as position takings, such as creating and exploiting network contacts, playing a role in evolving institutional formation processes (literary sociability, magazines), internalizing and propagating relevant artistic and non-artistic norms (conceptions of literature, ethos discursif), displaying them in literary products by using specific literary and generic devices (option esthétique), and creating a distinct profile by strategic publications. |
