Document Details : Title: Noli me tangere Subtitle: A Contribution to the Reading of Jn 20:17 Based on a Number of Philosophical Reflections on Touch Author(s): DEMASURE, Karlijn Journal: Louvain Studies Volume: 32 Issue: 3 Date: 2007 Pages: 304-329 DOI: 10.2143/LS.32.3.2033416 Abstract : This article examines the encounter between the risen Christ and Mary Magdalene in the light of recent philosophical reflections on the sense of touch. Drawing especially upon the work of Z. Baross, J.-L. Nancy, and L. Irigaray, we highlight the theological depth and the rich interpretative potential of the enigmatic words of Jesus to Mary, ‘Noli me tangere’, in John 20:17. The meanings attributed to these words range from prohibition to a declaration regarding the distance between the human and the divine. This article weighs the claims of recent interpreters and invites the reader to reflect on the existential significance of this irreducibly ambiguous passage. |
