It focuses on texts that were written on commission and published in media other than regular print: carved in glass or stone, moulded in metal, painted on walls, et cetera. This phenomenon has occurred throughout the 20th century and increasingly so during the last decades. Literary texts in the public space have received little scholarly attention so far. Four cases are presented: 1) De Transparant, a glass wall in Scheveningen carrying texts by sixteen authors; 2) ‘stenen gedicht’ (‘poem of stone’) by Gerrit Kouwenaar, written for the Batavia building in Amsterdam; 3) a poem written by Tom Lanoye for the Boerentoren in Antwerpen, 4) poems written by P.C. Boutens and Jan Prins for the Maastunnel in Rotterdam. |
