Abstract :
‘Leringhen inden boeken’ [=Learning in books] discusses the shift in fourteenth-century Dutch literature towards a literate mentality. There is a growing awareness that written texts can contribute to the rise of an intellectual culture in the vernacular. A growing number of authors argue that careful and conscious translation of Latin texts is of crucial importance for creating a literate culture in Dutch. In sharp contrast to the useless storytelling and fiction of the romances, authors aim to introduce the world of learning in Dutch written literature, providing new audiences with texts for autonomous consultation.
