Abstract :
The names in literary texts of the middle ages are at least since the nineteenth century also part of scientific perception. However, most onomastic efforts in this field are limited to individual studies, i.e., they investigate only certain aspects of name giving by a medieval author and only seldom present a systematic and inclusive picture. The possibility of a systematization of knowledge is offered by the typologies of functions and names, which Dieter Lamping and Hendrik Birus have developed with the help of modern literature. They certainly cannot readily be transferred to the older literature. Even more the question to be answered first is by how much medieval and contemporary literature are similar in terms of poetic foresight. Although after various attempts have been made in the literary theory of medieval studies to substantiate a concept of fictionality in the middle ages, an additional problem remains concerning the application of modern typologies. With the example of the Neidhart song cycle, a closing attempt will be made to get around these problems.
