Abstract :
This paper examines how the name game Margaret Atwood develops in The Handmaid’s Tale allows readers to enter into the novel’s dystopian world as subjects. Those who play the game, which involves acquiring knowledge forbidden by the State, are able to identify more closely with the protagonist and her situation and are thus more susceptible to the novel’s message about patriarchy. The paper also explores the significance of the protagonist’s name itself, demonstrating how the name June relates to the survival-through-procreation strategy that the protagonist adopts.
