Abstract :
For Muslims, the most original, authoritative and reliable source for describing the attributes of the Prophet Muhammad is the Qur’an. It is original in that there is no distance between the Prophet and the Qur’an, and it is reliable because the Qur’an is a authoritative source of information for every Muslim in his or her daily life. Therefore, in the eyes of all Muslims, the Qur’an is the only source that is not suspect. Sunna and hadith, as secondary sources of Islam, are also important for gaining information on the life and attributes of the Prophet Muhammad. In the Qur’an we find that two important attributes of the Prophet Muhammad are his «humanity» and his «prophethood» or «prophetic task.» This article describes these two Qur’anic attributes of the Prophet Muhammad with some special references to hadith and sirah sources and literature.
