Document Details : Title: Het hypnotisme en de wonderen Subtitle: De complexe vertaalslag van 'hypnose' en 'hypnotisme' in literatuur en wetenschap Author(s): KEMPERINK, Mary Journal: Spiegel der Letteren Volume: 49 Issue: 4 Date: 2007 Pages: 403-440 DOI: 10.2143/SDL.49.4.2025302 Abstract : In Dutch literature the theme of hypnosis and hypnotism gets shape around 1900, just as it does in the French, English and German literature of this period. In this translation from medical sciences towards literature, a series of mechanisms are involved. They can be related to literary genres, ideologies, myths and the fusion of ‘old’ and ‘new’ scientific knowledge. Simultaneously there also exists a movement in the opposite direction, namely from popularizing media like literature, journalism and music hall performances towards the medical sciences (psychology, psychiatry). The interpretation and representation of hypnosis and hypnotism in various scientific and non-scientific discourses concretizes the complex and dynamic character of the relationship of literature (culture) and science. |
