Abstract :
Jan de Weert’s Dispitacie van Rogiere ende van Janne is an imitation of Jacob van Maerlant’s Martijns. The master in the Dispitacie, Jan, has three dialogues with his student Rogier on free will, mercy and the influence of nature on the people living on earth. In this article I compare the protagonists, their roles and their interaction in the Dispitacie with those in the Martijns. Maerlant presents two friends who discuss several subjects, whereas De Weert presents a student who asks his teacher questions. We do not find any discussion in De Weert’s text, and the benefit of the dialogue is stressed more often. The differences between both texts seem to suggest that the audience De Weert writes for is less educated than Maerlant’s audience.
