Abstract :

According to the philosophical tradition, childhood and infancy are devoid of morality, which should therefore be inculcated to them through moral education. The A. challenges this tradition and analyzes what can be authentically considered as a «moral education». She examines current theoretical as well as empirical works in psychology based on an «internal» approach, which states that morality cannot be inculcated from outside but is rather the development of a universal psychological competence. She shows why it is both paradoxical and problematic to claim that childhood and infancy are pre-moral, as does Kohlberg in the continuation of Piaget. She argues, relying on recent works by Turiel and Nucci and on data from cognitive science, that both childhood and infancy are authentically moral and further shows the consequences of her thesis for moral education.
