Abstract :
In this article Cees Nooteboom’s In Nederland, published in 1984, is read from an imagological perspective. Dutch literary critics traditionally interpret the novel as an attack on Dutch mentality, originating from an author who has fled his native country. A closer look, however, invalidates such an interpretation. National stereotypes are used, but only to be exposed as pseudo-certainties. In this way the text undermines the standard discourse about Dutch mentality.
