Set against a number of relevant intertexts (de Certeau, Lehan, Keunen) it is possible to see how it details the ideological production of space. Two New Yorks are opposed to each other: that of officialdom and diplomacy, on the one hand, and that of the street, on the other. The point the novel makes is that these two worlds, rather than being opposed to each other, are each other’s complement. Moreover, the text reveals how instinct and emotion are the product and exponent of city life, rather than being its antithesis. |
