Peintre, Szyslo l’est, mais aussi homme de pensée, qui, en face de sept admirables reproductions en couleurs de lithographies, tient à citer les grands textes (les « lieux ») qui lui ont servi de tremplin pour travailler : Hubert et Mauss, sur le sacrifice, Samuel Beckett, Morley sur la civilisation maya, Georges Bataille, ainsi que les émouvants « Présages de la venue des Espagnols selon les informateurs de Sahagún » et l’élégie sur la mort de l’Inca Atahualpa The Place, the instruments Daniel Lefort presents an extensive portfolio by the great Peruvian poet reproduced in its entirety, celebrated by his friend Mario Vargas Llosa and so many other South and North American critics. Szyszlo is a painter, but he is also a thinker who, before the seven admirable color reproductions of his lithographs, insists on quoting the great texts (he calls them “places”) which served as springboards to his work: Hubert and Mauss on sacrifice, Samuel Beckett, Morley on Mayan civilization, Georges Bataille, as well as the moving “Omens of the coming of the Spanish according to Sahaguin’s informants” and an elegy on the death of the Inca Athahualpa. |
