Abstract :
In the endeavour of Christians to promote a respectful dialogue with Buddhists, Christian views about the individual and the Creator of all beings seem to be in contradiction with Buddhist assertions of the illusion of the self and of the Ultimate as complete emptiness. Attempts to harmonize those concepts intellectually will not be successful as they are contextually different. Moreover, true religious teachings are based on a spiritual experience where thoughts and distinctions have no place.
If we practice a meditation in which we are selfless, we should not try to obtain some kind of spiritual gratification or insight. If we attempt to become one with our breathing, we can become aware of the unlimited dimension of our being beyond all distinctions and find that there, in the silent cloud of unknowing, lies the common ground to which the religious teachings refer and want to lead us.
