Journal: Studies in Interreligious Dialogue Volume: 16 Issue: 2 Date: 2006 Pages: 173-189 DOI: 10.2143/SID.16.2.2017807 Abstract : This paper is a methodological exploration of Gianni Vattimo’s philosophical framework and its resonances in the Asian Bishops’ approach of interreligious dialogue. Embedded in Vattimo’s construal of hermeneutics is his use of the theological concept of kenosis as a lens to suggest that the end of the history of metaphysics can only be explained in religious terms. This contribution tries to discuss Vattimo’s significance in order to help provide impulses for conceiving new methodological and hermeneutical approaches to interreligious dialogue, taking seriously the radical diversity of cultures without losing sight of the universal value of caritas. Although Vattimo’s proposal may have been criticized as a hasty baptism of postmodernity and a weakening of the alterity and transcendence of God, his method endows one with critical reflexivity to point out the limits of any triumphalist discourse in dialogue and conversation today. |
