Or la mobilisation écologique est plus importante dans les pays de culture protestante. S'agit-il dès lors de la réaction contre un courant de pensée, accusé d'anthropocentrisme excessif? Dans cet article, nous examinons la relation entre protestantisme, modernité et désenchantement du monde. Cette relation n'est pas simplement causale, puisque la désacralisation de la nature est un thème fondamental du judaïsme et du christianisme des origines. Nous abordons Jean Calvin et son héritage, notamment la fortune littéraire de Robinson Crusoé. En finale, nous proposons une perspective respectueuse de la liberté humaine, fondée sur la catégorie forgée par Albert Schweitzer, «Ehrfurcht vor dem Leben», le «respect de toute vie». In radical ecology, the consciousness of human responsibility goes together with deep pessimism concerning the dignity of human beings who are viewed as being the planet’s parasites. The ecological movement is at its most important in countries with a Protestant culture. Could this be because of a reaction against a school of thought accused of excessive anthropocentrism? In this article we examine the relationship between Protestantism, modernity and the disillusionment of the world. This relationship is not simply a causal one, since the desacralization of nature is a fundamental theme in Judaism and in ancient Christianity. We have a look at John Calvin and his legacy, in particular the literary success of Robinson Crusoe. Finally we suggest a perspective which respects human freedom based on the idea created by Albert Schweitzer «Ehrfurcht von dem Leben» – «respect of all life». |
