Journal: Bibliotheca Orientalis Volume: 59 Issue: 3-4 Date: mei-augustus 2002 Pages: 241-245 DOI: 10.2143/BIOR.59.3.2015673 Abstract : The German scholar Gustaf Dalman (1855-1941) is known for his intimate knowledge of the languages spoken in Israel/Palestine, ancient and modern, which enabled him to write authoritative works on Jewish and Christian theology, Arab folklore, and the civilizations of the region in general. Most widely known is his Arbeit und Sitte in Palästina, abbreviated AuS or ASP, of which seven volumes appeared between 1928 and 1942. After many years, Volume VIII has now been published, based on his manuscripts. The introduction describes the vicissitudes of these Dalman papers, and the result are two full chapters on Birth and Education (p. 6-38), and sizeable portions of Life at Home (p. 39-97; much about meat). Only short notes on Hospitality and Burial follow. A number of photos and the Indexes to this volume conclude the book. The now following “Anhang” is much larger: the editors seized this opportunity to compile full indexes to the entire work (p. 278-501; subject-matter, quoted texts), and additional bibliographies (p. 187-277). |
