Met betrekking tot het Nabije-Oosten richtte ze zich tot nu toe voornamelijk op vier groepen bordspelen, waarbij er nauwelijks aandacht werd besteed aan andere – minder gekende – types. Kleinere speelobjecten, zoals pionnen, dobbelstenen en astragali, werden zelfs nog minder besproken. Dit artikel heeft als doel een overzicht te geven van de bordspelen en de kleinere speelobjecten, die gevonden werden tijdens opgravingen (of plunderingen) in het Nabije-Oosten. Een beperking van het onderzoeksgebied was echter noodzakelijk en er werd geopteerd om enkel de objecten, gemaakt vóór de komst van de islam, te behandelen. Deze einddatum is niet zomaar gekozen. In de 6de eeuw n. Chr. werd niet enkel de islam geïntroduceerd, maar ook het schaakspel. Archaeology of ludology. A study of board games, astragali, dice and pawns in the pre-islamic Near East Ludology, the study of games, has recently experienced a significant rise in popularity, but is still characterised by preassumptions and suppositions. Concerning the Near East, attention has been given mainly ot four groups of board games, neglecting other, less-known types. Small game objects, such as pawns, dice and astragali, are even less frequently studied. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the board games and small game objects found during (legal and illegal) excavations in the Near East. The subject of this study was limited to those objects dating to before the arrival of islam. This end date is not an arbitrary choice. The 6th century AD saw not only the introduction of islam, but of chess as well. |
