Abstract :
Archaeologically, a building’s function and meaning are often explained by looking at the design of the building in association with the spatial distribution of the artifacts. The limited published data and the unique morphology, make a contextual analysis of the Basin Building in Maroni-‘Vournes’ (Cyprus) necessary. The Basin Building is situated against the background of an emerging urban landscape of Late Cypriote II. This development is characterized by an alteration in socio-political organization, i.e. towards a state-level organization, dominated by an urban elite. Symbolically, the Basin Building is thus an exponent of elite behaviour. However, none of the proposed hypotheses could finally be corroborated with the Basin Building’s context.
