Abstract :
Clara Wieck was a brilliant pianist, courted by the composer Robert Schumann. Her musical gift helped to popularise Schumann’s music, particularly after he permanently injured his right hand, and was unable to play himself. Schumann begged Clara to marry him on many occasions, but her father was against it. Clara’s heart was indeed steadfast – as she claims in this letter to Schumann, written just before her eighteenth birthday – and they did eventually marry.
