In this collection in three volumes there are reflections on philosophy, culture, religion and literature and especially meditations on love, marriage and family, with the spiritual dimension of Christian life holding centre stage. The motto ‘I am you’ with which Capograssi concludes almost all the letters is a testimony to the couple’s intense and mutual desire to belong to one other – a desire ultimately sealed in marriage. – Despite its fragmentary nature, Pensieri a Giulia is an important testimony to the way that Catholicism has gradually moved towards a personalistic understanding of love. It is no accident that in the years that followed the period covered by these letters, Capograssi went on to be a guiding intellectual force in political Personalism in Italy. |
