European culture, and western culture in general, has witnessed an evolution in the popular understanding of marriage and the customs which surround it. This can be seen in five works of art, which span the past seven hundred years. The texts and actions of the Church have been embedded in this changing context. Liturgists and theologians discuss the meaning of the marriage liturgy, but it may be argued that the customs surrounding the liturgy give more meaning to the wedding day than the liturgy itself. In many ways the paintings of the marriage liturgy tell more about the theology enacted on the wedding day than the official liturgies. |
