Dans cet article, nous nous posons la question de savoir comment, après la chute de l’Empire en raison de revendications ethniques, la nouvelle république s’est approprié la question de la diversité ethnique lors de la création de l’État-nation? Pour cela, nous utilisons l’analyse des recensements de population, en nous limitant à la période allant de 1927 à 1965. En effet, tout au long de cette procédure de recensement, les préoccupations de l’État se manifestent clairement, aussi bien au niveau de la formulation des questions (sur la langue maternelle et la religion), que de la catégorisation et du filtrage des résultats. Nous verrons que le statisticien belge Camille Jacquart, l’organisateur du premier recensement, a joué un rôle important dans cette procédure. To Count, Classify, Control. Minorities in Turkish Census. From the very day of its foundation, the Turkish Republic, heir to the Ottoman Empire, has been concerned with the problem of non Turkish and non Muslim minorities. In the following article we ask the question of how, after the fall of the Empire as a consequence of ethnical revendications, the new Republic, with its creation of the «National State», took charge of the problem of ethnic diversity. To this end we make use of the analysis of population census, restraining our study to the period 1927-1963. As a matter of fact all along this census procedure, the concern of the state is obvious — as well concerning the formulation of the questions (maternal language and religion) than the categorisation and the filtering of results. The Belgian statistician Camille Jacquart, organizer of the first census, played an important part in this procedure. |
