Abstract :
Despite the advent of sophisticated invasive cardiac electrophysiology the clinical characterization of second-degree AV block remains problematic mostly because ofconfusing terminology and definitions1-4.Many misconceptions can be better understood by tracing their historical origin. This review discusses second-degree AV block through the work of the late Leo Schamroth, a giant in the field of electrocardiography. Three of his published electrocardiograms (ECG) are analyzed to highlight interpretive errors that resulted from the evolution ofknowledge ofsecond-degree AV block. This critique should be considered only for its educational value and in no way constitutes an attempt to demean Schamroth’s many and important contributions to electrocardiography.
