Abstract :
Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is a rare congenital heart disease with a birth prevalence of 0.1- 0.25/1,000 livebirths. Its aetiology remains almost totally unknown. In search for a possible relationship between prenatal and/or perinatal factors and HLHS occurrence, we evaluated 38 newborn cases of isolated HLHS, referred to the Sicilian Registry of Congenital Malformations between 1991 and 2000. A sample of 2,000 consecutive newborns with the same geographic origin was used as control group. For each case an accurate evaluation of the reproductive history with a questionnaire interview was performed. Statistical analysis was done by χ2 and t Student’s tests. Values of p<0.05 were significant.
