Abstract :
It has long been thought that above the age of 75 years it was very difficult,if not impossible, to influence the mortality rate at the population level. It was generally believed that above that age, alea iacta est. Mortality rates have been declining in the younger age classes in the industrialized world during the last 30 years with the exception of Eastern Europe. It was thus considered appropriate to specifically examine the evolution of the mortality rates between the ages of 75 and 84 years worldwide.
