Abstract :
In this article some possibilities are suggested for the interpretation of the remarkable use by the Dutch poet Gerrit Kouwenaar (°1923) of the impersonal pronoun ‘men’ [one] when designating the poet’s voice. This ‘men’ can be interpreted as a residue of Kouwenaar’s initial social and political bias towards ‘(man)kind’; as an indication of an epicuristic dimension in his poetry; and as a symptom of a ‘poststructuralistic’ loss of identity.
