Abstract :
This essay offers an analysis of Joannes Six van Chandelier’s extensive poem Schetse van Venecie(1651). It starts with a thorough reading of the text in the light of contemporary theory and practice regarding rhetoric. The analysis then uncovers the multi-layered nature of the Schetse. First it examines the poem’s position within the seventeenth-century Dutch perception of Venice as it is represented in other literary texts and in travel accounts. This reveals a strong political and economic dimension of the text, which is scrutinized in the third part of this essay. At last the autobiographical dimension will carefully be entered into the analysis, completing the complex hermeneutic structure of Six van Chandelier’s poem.
