Document Details : Title: The Constructions of the Argo in Apollonius' Argonautica Author(s): MURRAY, Jackie Journal: Caeculus Volume: 6 Date: 2005 Pages: 88-106 DOI: 10.2143/CAE.6.0.2004669 Abstract : In the proem of the Argonautica, lines 18 and 20 contrast Apollonius’ narrative persona (νῦν δ´ ἅν ἐγώ) with his predecessors in the Argonautic tradition (οἱ πρόσθεν ἔτι κλείουσιν ἀοιδοί). These lines are generally interpreted as a praeteritio or a recusatio. The scholarly consensus is that by mentioning his predecessors’ treatment of the construction of the Argo, Apollonius shows his unwillingness to go down that “well-trodden path” by either treating the theme directly or beginning his poem with it. |
