When two persons commit to a lifelong union, they bring together not just an amount of like-mindedness but also massive difference and diversity – from gender difference to different family backgrounds, different life stories and characters through to divergent preferences, needs and yearnings. Such differences cannot simply be obliterated or eliminated, but equally life together does not work if they are merely conserved and maintained unchanged. All the effort and art of married life is required to reconcile differences and to attain to a new togetherness that is constantly on the watch for renewal. |
