Symptoms of its peril abound. An unwaveringly high divorce rate and an increasing number of unmarried couples living together suggest that marriage is not highly prized in the minds of many. The search for reasons is difficult because the problem is complex. It might be said that our post-industrial society presents new socio-economic circumstances that no longer require marriage as a stabilizing force. At the same time, cultural circumstances have changed such that the need for autonomy competes with the desire for intimacy. Forging a lasting emotional relationship in these circumstances is difficult. Finally, for many reasons not a few of our contemporaries seem psychologically incapable of committing themselves to a life-long relationship with another person. |
