Abstract :

Till now, the title ỉmy-rɜ / mr sš(w) ḏɜḏɜt has been considered as a borrowing from the Old Kingdom connected with Justice. After a discussion about its origin, the author gives a list of its holders, a dozen distributed between the middle of the Twenty-Sixth Dynasty and the middle of the Ptolemaic Period. An analysis of this documentation allows then to recognize in the 'overseer of the scribes of the Council' a high functionary of the Treasury managing the accountants ordered by the central authority to register the wealth of the country, to estimate and to collect their imposition. The appearance of such an office could thus be related to Herodotus' testimony about a great fiscal reform led at the end of the Saite Period.
