Abstract :
Gardiner y a contribué avec un article intitulé 'The Problem of the Month-names'. Dans la RdE 11, R.A. Parker a répliqué avec l'article 'The Problem of the Month-names: A Reply'.

In the mid fifties, one of Egyptology's great debates culminated on this journal's pages. In RdE 10, A.H. Gardiner wrote on 'The problem of the Month-names'. In RdE 11, R.A. Parker responded with 'The Problem of the Month-names: A Reply'. The present article resumes the central thesis of the author's Civil Calendar and Lunar Calendar in Ancient Egypt (1997), namely that there are two problems of the month names. This article attempts to sharpen the distinction between the two problems as much as possible. It is suggested that failure to make the distinction has caused much confusion in the debate on Egyptian calendars. The events leading to the two problems of the names are described as the actions and decisions of anonymous calendar-makers. Identifying with these actions and decisions as if they were our own may promote understanding of the difficult problems regarding Egyptian calendars and of why these problems have so much to do with the names of months.
