Abstract :

Against Hobbes, who defends the indivisibility of sovereignty, Leibniz extols a plural sovereignty. However, his distrust of the absolutist risks of the Hobbesian theory of the State do not lead him to admit as lesser evils those already criticised by the English philosopher himself. By attacking Hobbes, which was uncommon for a philosopher often regarded as a flatterer, Leibniz attempts not to win over the opponents of Hobbes, but to reconcile the irreconcilable: on the one hand, the unity of the State that ensures security, and on the other hand, the plurality of powers that ensures freedom.
