The emigrants were mainly Greek Catholics and Maronites, who were part of a new trade network emerging in the Eastern Mediterranean. The same period witnessed an intensification of the efforts of the Vatican to tighten its grip on the Eastern Christian communities, combined with increased missionary activity. In this contribution the vicissitudes are reconstructed of a small migrant community, the Maronites of Damietta in the years 1740-1820, especially their relations with the Ottoman authorities, the Greek Catholic community and the French Franciscan missionaries. |
