Abstract :
A.J. (Patrick) van der Aalst – seventy-fifth birthday: A life dedicated to the study of Eastern Christianity.
A.J. (Patrick) van der Aalst (born 1921) was a leading member of the former Byzantine Institute of the Congregation of the Assumptionist Fathers at Nijmegen and for many years a member of the editorial staff of the periodical Het Christelijk Oosten. From 1966 until 1987 he held the chair of Eastern Theology at the University of Nijmegen.
The several stages of his education, his stay in the Orient (in Lebanon and at Jerusalem) and the most relevant thoughts of his publications are dealt with in the article by A. Burg, former chief editor of Het Christelijk Oosten. The major interests of prof. van der Aalst lay in the issue of the Hellenization of Christianity and in the future of the ecumenical dialogue. It has been said that in Europe East and West should function as two lungs, but, as A.J. van der Aalst added in one of his publications, they have a common heart.
