Abstract :
Unions and Union Projects of Romanians with the Church of Rome
A current interpretation of the adage ‘Extra ecclesiam nulla salus’ is that there is no salvation outside one’s own Church. Another interpretation, however, is that the Church is there where there is salvation.
Both interpretations played an important role in the Union project of the Moldavian Metropolis at the end of the sixteenth century and in the Transylvanian Union. However, in the Transylvanian Union social and political motives were at stake too. The author also describes a political union project at the end of the nineteenth century and the abolition of the Union in 1948.
