Abstract :
Fiorenza criticises the tendency in European-American feminist theory and theology to universalize gender difference. In her opinion, this masks the complex interstructuring of patriarchal dominations inscribed in the lives of individual women. She argues that we need to clear a discursive space where women as a political collectivity can define ourselves without needing to suppress the patriarchal structural divisions between us. For Fiorenza the ekklēsia of women is such an open rhetorical space bounded by its struggle against multiform oppression. Here, different strategies can be developed and the conflicting interests of women can be articulated and adjudicated within an ethic of solidarity.
