Journal: Revue des Études Arméniennes Volume: 29 Date: 2003-2004 Pages: 49-88 DOI: 10.2143/REA.29.0.2002619 Abstract : Now that the holdings of a large number of public collections of Armenian manuscripts can be accessed by fairly detailed catalogues, it is perhaps time to focus more intently on documenting the many codices still in private libraries and introducing their contents into the public domain. Although the latter tend to derive from a comparatively late period, like the one here described, they often reveal material of significant importance to scholarship. Often they serve to reinforce the text critical dictum that, in attempting to evaluate a given manuscript’s relative purity as a witness, its own date is of much less moment than that of its exemplar. This in turn highlights the arbitrariness of applying upper chronological limits in selecting manuscripts for an edition in order to reduce the amount of collation to be undertaken before gaining a preliminary sense of the development of the work’s transmission history as a whole. |
