Abstract :

Extraposition and Informative Structuring
The extraposition is an unknown to the grammar school syntactical function that may be defined as an immediate constituent of S(entence) that is also expansion of S. At the informative level, it has the property of making the concerned phrase not exclusively a theme or topic, but an informative support of the utterance. Put at the end of the sentence, it makes the concerned constituent an informative queue («report»).
It must be distinguished from the simple linear putting in front with descending intonation, that, in German or in spoken French, makes the concerned constituent the central part of the informative contribution («apport») of the utterance. Whereas the first position may concern only one constituent of the sentence, there may be several successive extrapositions.
