Essentially, it will focus attention on the movement of Byzantine goods eastward from the Empire, and of oriental goods westward into the Empire, irrespective of the identities of their carriers or middlemen – Auxumites, Himyarites, Persians: many being Nestorian Christians. Recent archaeological work or study of material at Alexandria, in the Red Sea area, the Yemen, Sri Lanka, at Merv and Begram, in Russia's Kama Valley and in China provides new evidence to consider. |
