Abstract :
During the first half of the twentieth century the position of the Armenian Apostolic Church was sad and exceptional. On Armenian territory the Armenian Church was persecuted up to physical destruction by two different totalitarian regimes. In western Armenia and Cilicia on Turkish territory the Armenian Genocide (1915-1920/21) caused fatal destruction. In eastern Armenie sovietization (1920) and stalinization (1937-1939) destroyed nearly all parishes and monasteries. The Armenian Apostolic Church has to face an intensive discussion about its own history. A first step forward would be the canonisation of the liturgical commemoration of the martyrs in the service of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
