Nephron sparing surgery for renal cell carcinoma
Surgery is the only curative treatment for renal cell carcinoma and classically a radical nephrectomy has been advocated for solid kidney tumors suspected to be malignant.
Recently more and more smaller tumors are incidentally found because of the use of ultrasound and computer tomography. These small tumors are amenable for kidney sparing surgery as was shown in imperative situations where radical nephrectomy would result in an anephric state necessitating dialysis. The results of kidney sparing surgery in imperative situations were acceptable and those in elective indications, with a normal contralateral kidney, the tumor itself being easily resectable were even better. Nowadays partial nephrectomy has become the standard approach for small low stage low grade solid kidney tumors. In expert centers also laparoscopic partial nephrectomies are now being performed
