Vomiting and anorexia in an elderly patient
An 78-year-old patient is admitted because of anorexia, vomiting, and upper abdominal pain. Based on the CT scan and an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, a diagnosis could be made of Bouveret’s syndrome.
This rare complication of gallstone disease consists of the impaction of a large stone in the duodenum which is accompanied by signs of an upper gastrointestinal obstruction.
In most cases, this situation necessitates a surgical intervention. In this patient, we were able to remove the stone endoscopically by electrohydraulic lithotripsy and dormiabasket extraction.
